13. What is the relationship between the

       coroner and the police ?

 

Coroners may ask the police to assist in their investigations and in many cases the police will conduct their own investigation, if a crime is suspected. During a police investigation, the police Family Liaison Officer (FLO) should maintain contact and keep you informed of progress. When investigations are complete, the police file will be passed to the coroner and if no-one is to be charged with a criminal offence, an inquest will be held. If someone is charged with a criminal offence, whether or not an inquest is held depends on the charge made. (Section 14)
